In 1892, at the age of 27, Albert H. Weinbrenner, alongside his partner Joseph Peffer, opened a cobblery in Milwaukee, catering to the "Jobbing" trades. The year 1900 saw the formation of the Albert H. Weinbrenner Co., and by 1916, the company had established itself as a leader in the field, boasting more leather cutting machines than any other in the United States. In 1917, the "Job-fitted" concept was introduced, and Weinbrenner became a major contributor of boots to the U.S. Army during World War I.

The 1930s and 1940s were pivotal decades for the company. In 1938, the company took its first steps into the production of safety footwear, and in 1942, it celebrated its 50th anniversary by converting its entire operation to the production of military footwear for the duration of World War II. During this time, the company's military-style boots also gained popularity among civilians.

In 1943, the company's workers organized under the International Boot & Shoe Workers Union, yet the management and workers maintained an outstanding relationship that continues to this day. The 1960s saw the introduction of the iconic "Hike n' Camp" boot, which became the company's best-selling boot of all time and is still available in its original design.

The late 20th century brought further changes, with the company being purchased by a local group in 1988, leading to the creation of the "ThoroGard" division, which focused on high-tech occupational safety footwear. In 2000, the company's employees took ownership of the company through an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan).
